‘Today is all about you’
Emma Thompson made history this week as she received a damehood for her services to drama, recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list.
Well it’s hardly surprising given the iconic roles under her belt – from P.L. Travers and Elinor Dashwood to Mrs. Potts and Sybil Trelawney. In fact she deserved a damehood for the Love Actually scene where she opened the Joni Mitchell CD instead of the gold necklace, alone!
But it wasn’t the damehoood or her Stella McCartney suit that got the world talking this morning. Instead, it was her interaction with her good friend Prince William as he bestowed the honour on her at Buckingham Palace.
‘I love Prince William, I’ve known him since he was little, and we just sniggered at each other,’ Dame Emma recounted of the ceremony yesterday, going on to recall their hilarious exchange. ‘I said, “I can’t kiss you, can I?” And he said, “No don’t”!’
‘If you’re first up you have to be more formal on such an occasion, but he’s looking wonderful and doing so well,’ the 59-year-old explained, before revealing the very sweet thing Prince William told her during her ceremony. ‘He said, “This day isn’t about me, it’s about you”.’
Going on to talk about her friendship with the family, Emma explained: ‘It’s really lovely because I’ve always loved the boys and I’ve always been a long-term correspondent with their dad, it’s a very lovely feeling.’
What’s Emma going to do with her damehood? ‘I’m very outspoken, politically, I’m a card-carrying feminist, human rights advocate,’ she explained. ‘So good for them, because the establishment need more people who can speak up for those things.’
