Golden Globes Dresses through the ages

With the Golden Globes just around the corner, it’s official, this year’s Awards season is kicking off, and we’re feeling a little nostalgic, so we thought we’d have a look back at the most iconic red carpet moments.

Golden Globes red carpet 2018

Let’s start with the most recent one, which was a year ago. You could argue the Golden Globes 2018 were one of the most memorable in the history of the awards, because it was of course the one where pretty much everyone on the red carpet wore black designer dresses, to protest against sexual harassment in the industry, in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal. The likes of Emma Watson, Jessica Biel, Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon all wore black, and many made an extra political statement by wearing Time’s Up badges – whilst others wore white to signify peace and unity.

The Golden Globes red carpet over the years

There are so many memorable red carpet moments, it’s hard to condense it all in a few paragraphs, but let us try.

So many strong looks happened in the 90s and early noughties, not least Kate Moss’ high-neck sequin dress in 1995, when she attended with then-boyfriend Johnny Depp. What a couple. We were also into Sarah Michelle Gellar’s 2001 halterneck Valentino number, Sarah Jessica Parker’s 2002 baby pink Emmanuel Ungaro gown and what the Friends cast wore in 1995. A relatively unknown Angelina Jolie also made her red carpet debut in 1998 in a sparkling dress.

There was also Salma Hayek’s unforgettable deep crimson corseted Narciso Rodriguez gown in 2003, and Hillary Swank’s sleek copper Calvin Klein gown when she picked up her award for Million Dollar Baby.

And, who could forget Sienna Miller’s Grecian moment? The actress shimmered in a stunning white Marchesa gown with intricate metallic overlay. And her unusual milkmaid braid and natural, bronzed make-up made for one stunning red-carpet look.

But let’s not forget the Golden Globes have been going for 76 years, and there were some iconic looks back in the day too, like Marilyn Monroe’s black sequin dress in 1962, Liza Minneli and Elizabeth’s Taylor’s excellent sequins and shoulder pads in 1985, and Audrey Hepburn’s sleek look.

This year’s Golden Globes will be held on Sunday 6th of January, and we’ll be sure to share all the best looks then.
