Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s unprecedented decision to step back from their roles as senior royals has caused shockwaves across the globe. There were reports that the Queen was unaware of the move as a result of courtiers blocking her grandson from seeing her beforehand, ‘crisis’ talks between the monarch, Prince Philip, Prince William and Harry, and finally statements from Buckingham Palace and Harry himself revealing how they all intend to move forward.

While they have lost their HRH titles, in January 2019 it was announced that Meghan was appointed patron of the National Theatre, the Association of Commonwealth Universities and Smart Works.

She also represents The Mayhew, an animal re-homing charity. It is a cause close to Meghan’s heart, and she has two rescue dogs – Guy, and a black Labrador believed to be the dog that Harry and Meghan adopted together.

This week, Meghan decided to share behind-the-scenes photos of her recent trip to The Mayhew, and the visit wasn’t previously reported on.

Alongside photos of the Duchess at the centre, the caption reads: ‘Earlier this month, The Duchess of Sussex popped in to see the amazing people at Mayhew to hear about the incredible progress made throughout the festive period.

‘The Duchess of Sussex, having been proud patron of Mayhew since January 2019 and long understanding the connection between animal and community welfare, applauds the people at Mayhew for the vital work that they do every day.

‘From cats and dogs who have found new homes to animal welfare cases handled in the community – @TheMayhew believes in the power of togetherness and the special bond between humans and animals.’

Meghan was also spotted at a women’s shelter in Canada recently. According to reports, she made a surprise visit to the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre in Vancouver to ‘offer support’ and to ‘boost the staff’s spirits’.

Prince William has opened up about his romantic proposal to Kate Middleton

It has been almost nine years since Prince William and Kate Middleton tied the knot at Westminster Abbey. The couple said ‘I do’ in front of millions of people worldwide in April 2011, and it has been reported that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge actually had a marriage pact when they were dating. According to royal biographer Kate Nicholls, the pair decided to make promise they’d exchange vows during a make or break trip to the Seychelles in 2007.

‘There on the paradise island, William promised Kate that he was in the relationship for the long term,’ she wrote in her book, Kate: The Future Queen.

‘For the very first time, they talked seriously about marriage, and with the ocean before them and beneath the night sky, they made a pact to marry.’

And it turns out that William’s proposal was actually pretty ‘romantic’ according to Kate.

During a recent reception at Buckingham Palace to mark the UK-Africa Investment Summit, William said: ‘The African continent holds a very special place in my heart. It is the place my father took my brother and me shortly after our mother died.

‘And when deciding where best to propose to Catherine, I could think of no more fitting place than Kenya to get down on one knee.’

Following their engagement announcement in November 2010, William said: ‘We had been talking about marriage for a while so it wasn’t a massively big surprise.’

Kate added: ‘It was very romantic. There’s a true romantic in there.’

During an interview with CNN back in 2010, William explained that he wanted to pop the question somewhere that really meant something to him, telling reporters: ‘I regularly daydream. Africa is definitely one of the places I go to. It does completely settle me down. [Kate] understands what it means to me being in Africa, and my love of conservation.

‘I didn’t really plan it that far in advance. I just knew I wanted it to feel comfortable where I did it.’

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle recently announced that they would be stepping back from their roles as senior royals and splitting their time between the UK and North America.

The news came as a huge surprise, not only to the public but reportedly to the Queen too who hadn’t known about the announcement as Harry’s attempts to discuss details with her were reportedly blocked by courtiers.

Shortly after they released their joint statement outlining their plans, Meghan flew to Canada to reunite with baby Archie Harrison and Harry remained in the UK for ‘crisis’ talks with the monarch, Prince Charles and Prince William.

Buckingham Palace then revealed that the Queen was supportive of Harry and Meghan’s decision, although it was later announced that the couple would lose their HRH status and that they would become financially independent in Spring 2020.

It has also been claimed that their new arrangement will expire and be up for review in a year’s time.

At a charity event in London earlier this week, Harry opened up about the unprecedented move, telling guests: ‘It brings me great sadness that it has come to this.

‘The decision that I have made for my wife and I to step back is not one I made lightly.’

Today, the Daily Mail has obtained pictures of Harry as he flew into Vancouver after meeting with Boris Johnson and other world leaders at the UK-Africa Investment Summit in London.

It is thought to be one of his last official royal engagements before breaking away from the monarchy.

Many royal fans are convinced that the couple will be moving much sooner than anticipated as it was reported that they had flown their dogs overseas before Christmas.

Meghan’s rescue dog, Guy, flew out with the Sussexes in November, alongside a female black Labrador believed to be the dog that they adopted together.

Harry and Meghan haven’t confirmed when the move will take place, although Harry did reveal during his recent speech that Archie was enjoying the snow in Canada.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made news this month as they announced that they were planning on stepping down from their roles as ‘senior’ members of the royal family, hoping to become financially independent.

‘After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution,’ the statement read. ‘We intend to step back as “senior” members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen’.

The statement continued: ‘It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment. We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages.’

It was then announced over the weekend that the couple would be losing their royal titles and paying back the millions spent on the renovations of Frogmore Cottage.

While the royal couple were undoubtedly expecting that their resignation would rustle a few feathers, surely nothing could have prepared them for the intense backlash they have faced.

Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland reportedly announced earlier this week that Meghan is ‘strong’ and would ‘always be OK’.

It was her father Thomas Markle’s reaction however that caused the most news.

Speaking in depth to Channel 5 since what is being dubbed ‘Megxit’, Thomas announced: ‘I’m Archie’s grandpa. I’m Thomas Markle. This is my story.’

‘With Meghan and Harry separating from the Royals… it’s disappointing because she actually got every girl’s dream,’ he recalled in the Channel 5 documentary, Thomas Markle: My Story. ‘Every young girl wants to become a princess and she got that and now she’s tossing that away. It looks like she’s tossing that away for money.’

He later continued: ‘When they got married they took on an obligation, and the obligation is to be part of the Royals and to represent the Royals. And it would be foolish for them not to.

‘This is one of the greatest long-living institutions ever. They are destroying it, they are cheapening it.’

Meghan and Thomas are reported not to have spoken since before the wedding, with Thomas telling the documentary, ‘I can’t see her reaching out to me, especially now, and in light of what I’m saying now she probably won’t, or Harry for that matter.

Thomas Markle: My Story will air on Wednesday night at 9pm.

Since announcing that they intend to step back from their roles as senior royals, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have dominated headlines around the world.

Whether it’s their decision to split their time between the UK and Canada, the royal family’s reaction to the news or the fact that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will be losing their HRH titles, the world has been keenly watching the British monarchy and waiting for the next step in this unprecedented move.

The couple decided that they would also like to become financially independent from the institution, and will be repaying ‘Sovereign Grant expenditure for the refurbishment of Frogmore Cottage’, and while their initial statement was hopeful that they could continue to ‘honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages’, Buckingham Palace has confirmed that ‘as agreed in this new arrangement, [Harry and Meghan] understand that they are required to step back from Royal duties, including official military appointments.’

Earlier this week, Harry made a speech at a London dinner for his charity, Sentebale, revealing that ‘there was no other option’ but to resign, telling guests: ‘It brings me great sadness that it has come to this.

‘The decision that I have made for my wife and I to step back is not one I made lightly.’

Now, a royal source told People that Harry and Meghan’s new positions will be reviewed in a year.

They explained that the changes, which – according to a statement from Buckingham Palace – will take effect in Spring 2020, will be revisited by the royals in a year. It is likely that the Queen, Prince Charles, Prince William and Prince Harry will be involved in the 2021 talks.

Since discussing his resignation, Harry has flown to Canada to reunite with Meghan and their son, baby Archie Harrison.

What does this mean for their royal titles? Well, the couple will lose their HRH status and their titles will reportedly be changed to Harry, Duke of Sussex and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.

Meghan’s name in particular has caused controversy, with the proposed new title still under review as the format of the title is generally reserved for members of the family who have divorced away from the royals, e.g. Sarah, Duchess of York.

Releasing an official statement, Buckingham Palace announced: ‘The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are grateful to Her Majesty and the Royal Family for their ongoing support as they embark on the next chapter of their lives.

‘As agreed in this new arrangement, they understand that they are required to step back from Royal duties, including official military appointments.’

The statement continued: ‘They will no longer receive public funds for Royal duties. With The Queen’s blessing, the Sussexes will continue to maintain their private patronages and associations. While they can no longer formally represent The Queen, the Sussexes have made clear that everything they do will continue to uphold the values of Her Majesty.

‘The Sussexes will not use their HRH titles as they are no longer working members of the Royal Family. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have shared their wish to repay Sovereign Grant expenditure for the refurbishment of Frogmore Cottage, which will remain their UK family home. Buckingham Palace does not comment on the details of security arrangements.

The statement concluded: ‘There are well established independent processes to determine the need for publicly funded security. This new model will take effect in the Spring of 2020.’

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are yet to comment.

Two of baby Archie's Godparents have officially been revealed

And we couldn’t have called it.

Following the news that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were stepping down as senior roles of the royal family, and subsequently losing their HRH status, it’s hardly surprising that the past week has been all about the Sussex family. And given the public interest, it looks like it’s going to be that way for some time.

Today however was all about their baby son, Archie, as two of his previously secret Godparents were revealed.

Archie was born in May, with those asked to be his Godparents keeping quiet. In fact, the mystery of which of their close friends were chosen has been driving the public crazy.

Misha Nonoo? Serena Williams? George and Amal Clooney? David and Victoria Beckham? There have been so many guesses.

It was announced this weekend however that two of the Godparents chosen for Archie were both childhood mentors of Prince Harry.

The chosen two? According to a source via The Sunday Times, it was Tiggy Pettifer, Harry’s former nanny and Mark Dyer, his minder and mentor who he reportedly saw as a ‘second father’.

The wait is finally over, but with royals using boasting six or seven Godparents, there must be another four or five names out there.

Who are the others? Only time will tell.

The cast of The Crown have weighed in on Harry and Meghan's resignation

The cast of The Crown have weighed in on Harry and Meghan's resignation

Helena Bonham Carter, who plays Princess Margaret in The Crown, has weighed in on the latest royal updates.

Words by Kate McCusker

Speaking at last night’s Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards, The Crown actress Helena Bonham Carter has weighed in on Harry and Meghan’s decision to take a step back from their roles as senior members of the royal family, calling the couple ‘masters of their own destiny.’

The BAFTA-winning actress, who plays Harry’s great-aunt Princess Margaret in the Netflix drama’s third season, was sympathetic to the couple’s historic decision.

She told the People, Entertainment Weekly and TNT live stream: ‘The world is their oyster and it will be interesting to see what they do. Now they are masters of their own destiny and good luck to them.’

Josh O’Connor, who plays Harry’s father, Prince Charles, in the show also weighed in on the much-debated royal drama, saying that he is hopeful for the couple’s future.

‘I imagine they could probably do anything. I’m sure they are very talented and can go off and do whatever they want. I hope so,’ he told reporters.

The cast of The Crown won big at last night’s starry award show, taking home the prize for the Best Ensemble in a TV Drama prize.

The actors’ comments come after Buckingham Palace’s announcement on Saturday that the couple will stop using their HRH titles and cease royal duties, including official military appointments, from the Spring.

Prince Harry spoke of the ‘leap of faith’ decision at a charity event in London last night, admitting that he and Meghan had hoped to continue serving the Queen on their own terms, without public funding. ‘Unfortunately that wasn’t possible,’ he conceded.

However, fans of The Crown were left disappointed when the show’s executive producer, Susie Mackie, said the Netflix drama was unlikely to depict any modern storylines, including the drama surrounding Harry and Meghan’s exit.

She told PA earlier this month: ‘I think we’ll probably…we won’t travel to the present day.

‘To be honest, whatever the life of The Crown is after where we are now, I doubt we’ll ever go as far into the present day.’

But with the award’s season success of the show, fans have some hope of the show continuing long enough to see Harry and Meghan’s story depicted on screen.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made news this month as they announced that they were planning on stepping down from their roles as ‘senior’ members of the royal family, hoping to become financially independent.

It was then announced over the weekend by Buckingham Palace that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will be losing their HRH titles following a new deal, and repaying ’Sovereign Grant expenditure for the refurbishment of Frogmore Cottage’.

Releasing an official statement, Buckingham Palace announced: ‘The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are grateful to Her Majesty and the Royal Family for their ongoing support as they embark on the next chapter of their lives.’

It was a surprise explanation on the subject from Prince Harry however that made the most news, as the Duke of Sussex explained his reason behind the decision to assembled guests at a London dinner for his charity, Sentebale.

‘It brings me great sadness that it has come to this. The decision that I have made for my wife and I to step back is not one I made lightly,’ he explained. ‘It was so many months of talks after so many years of challenges. And I know I haven’t always gotten it right, but as far as this goes, there really was no other option.’

He continued: ‘What I want to make clear is we’re not walking away, and we certainly aren’t walking away from you. Our hope was to continue serving the Queen, the commonwealth, and my military associations, but without public funding. Unfortunately, that wasn’t possible. I’ve accepted this, knowing that it doesn’t change who I am or how committed I am.

‘I hope that helps you understand what it had come to, that I would step my family back from all I have ever known, to take a step forward into what I hope can be a more peaceful life. I was born into this life, and it is a great honour to serve my country and the Queen.’

Going on to reflect on his childhood, he continued: ‘When I lost my mum 23 years ago, you took me under your wing. You’ve looked out for me for so long, but the media is a powerful force, and my hope is one day our collective support for each other can be more powerful because this is so much bigger than just us.

‘It has been our privilege to serve you, and we will continue to lead a life of service. It has also been a privilege to meet so many of you, and to feel your excitement for our son Archie, who saw snow for the first time the other day and thought it was bloody brilliant!’

Harry then spoke about his grandmother, the Queen, stating: ‘I will always have the utmost respect for my grandmother, my commander in chief, and I am incredibly grateful to her and the rest of my family, for the support they have shown Meghan and I over the last few months.

‘I will continue to be the same man who holds his country dear and dedicates his life to supporting the causes, charities and military communities that are so important to me. Together, you have given me an education about living. And this role has taught me more about what is right and just than I could have ever imagined. We are taking a leap of faith – thank you for giving me the courage to take this next step.’

Well, that’s that.

Last night saw the 2020 Screen Actors Guild awards, held this year at LA’s Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall. And with nominees from Jodie Comer and Margot Robbie to Charlize Theron and Renée Zellweger, the night promised to be one of the most memorable yet.

From the vegan menu and Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt’s reunion to the political stands, this year’s SAG Awards made non-stop news.

One of the sweetest moments of the night however was a hug between Jennifer Lopez and Phoebe Waller-Bridge, with the two iconic women sharing their love for each other backstage.

They are now the celebrity friendship we never knew we needed.

It was a big night for Phoebe who picked up the Best Actress gong.

‘Oh my god,’ she told the crowd as she accepted her SAG award. ‘Thank you everyone! I normally try and be spontaneous in these speeches but I don’t trust myself not to be bleeped out again so I’ve written something down.

‘This is what I really wanted to say. The Fleabag team go home tomorrow, back to the UK. Except for Brett [Gelman], who you get to keep. Lucky things. I have to say from the bottom of our heart, thank you for being so supportive of our show on these shores. With all the chaos of the outfits and the interviews and the six pack that my makeup artist drew on me this evening. All the pre-drinks and after parties and all the amazing Hollywood-y things that happen here, it’s really easy to get distracted from the thing that has actually happened to us.’

She continued: ‘At some point it will all hit me and I’ll just go into a corner and have a good cry about it. But tonight, we, the Fleabag gang from the UK will soak this up and celebrate with all of you amazing actors in a room that I never imagined I would ever be in. This whole thing really has been a dream and if I wake up tomorrow and discover it was just that, thank you. It’s been the most beautiful dream.’

Well, that’s lovely.
