This practice has been used for centuries, just like modern lips and mouth lips. Oil pulling may include a mechanism similar to the soap making process (also called saponification).

The fat in the oils used in the process is emulsified in bicarbonate ions (found in saliva). This suggests an increase in the oil's cleaning action ( 3 )

Studies show that using oil can reduce concentrations of Streptococcus mutans in plaque and saliva ( 6 ). This ultimately helps to prevent oral bacterial problems.

In another study, the use of coconut oil in oil drawing achieves similar antibacterial effects compared to OTC ( 7 ). pulling activates salivary enzymes that absorb bacterial toxins and remove them from the body through the tongue ( 2 ). It works by attracting the lipid layers of the membranes of the bacterial cells, causing them to draw to the oil.

Coconut oil works particularly well in this aspect because it contains monolaurin (a chemical). Monolaurin changes the walls of bacterial cells, causing their death ( 2 ). Sesame and sunflower oil also exhibit antibacterial activity against S. mutans ( 2 ) .

  2. Eliminating Bad Breath

In regions where the availability of modern mouthwash is scarce, oil extraction can be a great alternative.

The oil pull action also generates antioxidants from the oil that kills microbes by damaging their cell walls

Oil pulling also outperforms most traditional mouthwashes as it does not cause side effects or staining of the mucous membrane for prolonged use ( 3 ) Cures Cavities

Studies show that pulling oil can cure cavities and caries. Lutobacillus ] are the two most common bacteria that cause cavities 10 ) In one study, the 40-day oil drain mode showed a 20% reduction in the total number of microbial cavities ( 3 )

The inflammation of the gums (also known as gingivitis) is caused by the bacteria found in the plaque ( 11 ). Coconut oil can treat gingivitis associated with plaque. This effect of coconut oil is due to the presence of lauric acid (middle-chain fatty acid) in the oil having anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity ( 12 ). some important factors associated with gum inflammation. These include plate index, gingival results, and the total number of colonies of aerobic microorganisms 13 .) The oils work by covering teeth and gums. In this way, they inhibit the accumulation of bacteria. The reports suggest that the use of oils makes corneal and healthy gums and also stops bleeding ( 2 ). More research is required here ( 14 ).
